workbench on wheels

What I really don’t like, is to waste time searching for tools. And I used to do this a big time. So there was the need to organize my tools somehow. Should be something flexible. Walking with a nut number 13 from one side of the bike to the other, to realize it’s number 12, and not 13 doesn’t belong to my favorite activities nether. And of course I need a proper work bench on wheels. Solid enough with a parallel vice.

Out of that, the idea was born to build a workbench on wheels with drawers for tools. I started to do some sketches in CAD. In the end I came up with this concept:

I made the frame of aluminum tubes and all the volumes of multiplex birch plywood. Luckily a friend of mine was building a table and a bench and had a piece of fantastic  wood (40 mills birch) for me. I milled a groove on top following the edge in the hope, it will stop round things like screws or drill bits to roll off the surface and fall down.

The runners for the drawers are very cheap ones I found on amazon. They are self closing (quite important to keep the drawers closed, when the workbench will be moved around) but without soft close. Got to say, I’m really happy with the quality.

For some reasons I decided not to paint the drawers dark grey and oil them instead. Mostly because I don’t like dealing with paint and I consider myself as a lazy person. Luckily, because for my opinion the finished result looks better then the rendering.
